Stuff and nonsense

January 13, 2010
By George
Just been taking 10 minutes over lunch to read the internet*, and on Comment Is Free started clicking on the "Most Commented" links on the right.

Ended up reading these, both by George Monbiot, the first of which I clicked on because the headline made me go "Yes. Quite right". And the second of which I clicked on because the headline made me go "No. Surely not?" (and because I've only seen two films at the cinema in the last 12 months, of which Avatar was one, I feel like I'm actually in a position to have an opinion).

Was going to write at length** about both of them, but then found far more succinct conclusions in the comments. So I'm just going to post them instead...

1. Britain's cold snap does not prove climate science wrong

"Go and stand in front of a nice big globe, spin it round to the UK, and stare at the tiny little island you live on whilst repeating the following mantra: 'British weather is not the same as the global climate. British weather is not the same as the global climate. British weather is not the same as the global climate." (rideearthtom)

2. Mawkish, maybe. But Avatar is a profound, insightful, important film

"It really isn't, if you've already seen the half dozen other films that tell the same story." (ScottishWildcat)

And then the last story made me think of this, which is just mindblowing...

Avatar fans suicidal because planet Pandora is not real

SPOILER ALERT - this next paragraph isn't as spoilery as it was when I first wrote it, but even so, if you haven't seen Avatar you might not want to read it. Don't worry, although it contains the punchline of this post, it's not that funny***

Especially the guy who said "I even contemplate suicide thinking that if I do it I will be rebirthed in a world similar to Pandora and the everything is the same as in Avatar". He obviously wasn't concentrating. No, first you need to get yourself an Avatar, then convince the Na'vi to love you, then get them to conduct the spooky ritual. THEN you will be rebirthed in Pandora and everything will be the same as in Avatar.

* No, not all of it.
** Well, maybe not at length.
*** Although I now consider this to be the punchline of the post****.
**** No, this is the punchline*****.
***** No... you get the picture.
